The Strong Word September 2011

One of the songs that we sing on a regular basis begins:- Give thanks with a grateful heart… The song continues the theme that is so familiar in the scriptures, especially the Psalms, that of giving thanks to God for all that he has done for us. The weak have been given strength and the poor have become eternally rich.

We live in a world where it can be difficult some days to see good, in a world where a few seem to have it all, yet it is sadly easy to forget the billions who have so little and less than they need just to get by. The Harvest weekend may be passed, but we remain on the lookout each day, all year, for things to give thanks for. We can “Count our blessings” as another old song reminds us, giving genuine thanks to God for all that he is and does for us.

To give thanks and to praise God is I believe a healthy thing to do. It increases our happiness, general health and quality of life as well as preventing us from becoming grumpy! Giving thanks is not just limited to what we do with our mouths and voices but is reflected in the things that we do, as well as in the way we do them and live out our lives. An attitude of thanks and praise is one of the best witnesses to our faith.

The Apostle Paul seems to have it right when he tells us he has learnt to be content in whatever circumstances. On one occasion we hear of him & Silas praising God even after a severe beating in Jail! We note praise and thanksgiving brings change and blessing into what I call adverse circumstances.(See Acts 16.25)

My daily Bible notes have a number of suggested readings each day, one of which is always a Psalm, which enables me to begin a day with Praise to God. Just to read one of the 150 Psalms in the evening can be a useful way of focusing on God after a busy or difficult day.

Sunday worship also provides us with the chance each week to lift our hearts in Praise to God, may the Lord help each of us Praise and thank God in sincerity and with faith. Let everything that has breathe Praise the Lord!
