The Strong Word – May 2012

The greatest unobserved event of the Christian calendar takes place on Thursday 17th May, Ascension Day. We are especially bad at this in the free churches! This is when we remember 40 days after the resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. In Acts Chapter One it is recorded that Jesus discussed the need to await the power of the Holy Spirit then he left the disciples looking up as a cloud hid him from sight.

Two angels, men in white, addressed the disciples as they were looking intently upwards. “Why stand looking into the sky, the Jesus you saw ascend will one day return in the same way.” So now we know how things will be in the future. We also know that like the disciples we are not meant to keep looking up, but with the power of the spirit and in the light of the Easter story we look to share the power and love of God in the place that we are called to live.

Pentecost Sunday on 27th May is when we shall celebrate the power of God’s Spirit in our lives until the work of Jesus on earth is done. It is a privilege to be a partner with the Creator God in his purposes, to have the daily power and presence of the Holy Spirit to enable things to happen. Easter is the time of new beginnings.

If we are honest, like the disciples of the first century, we know as ordinary human beings we are weak and no match for this task. But God gives to all who ask the resources to be the people he wants us to be, to fulfil his purposes in this world.

One day, we know not when, we shall look up and the Lord Jesus will appear once again in the clouds of heaven, coming towards us, to take us to our eternal home.

But while it is still daylight we are all called to take seriously our responsibility of discipleship.

For the sake of this sad and hurting world may we each know the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God and the daily fellowship of the Holy Spirit, both now and forever. Amen! Amen!
