The Strong Word September 2013

John we know, others we are less familiar with. I believe that the senior author/editor is God himself by the presence of his spirit in human lives. I am also often surprised by the common themes of God’s love that comes to us, not only in the familiar books of the Bible but also in the more obscure books and chapters. There is a constant unity of message and purpose.

Take Lamentations Chapter 3 for instance, written by the prophet Jeremiah at a time of chaos and sadness in his own life and the life of the nation. We read from verse 21:-

“The Compassions of the Lord never fail, they are new every morning –Great is your faithfulness …the Lord is my portion, therefore I will wait for him. For the Lord is good to those who hope in him, to those who seek him. It is good to wait quietly…..”

These words form the basis of the wonderful hymn “Great is thy Faithfulness O God my Father” (read it, or sing it to yourself in Mission Praise Number 200). It reminds us that whatever our circumstances, or the speed or slowness of change, it is each day that God is faithful and does show mercy, sufficient for the needs of that day.

It is, I hope, with a healthy mixture of confidence, hope and encouragement in the Lord we can learn to trust in Him, in Him alone, especially as we enter our new season at Carey this September following the summer break. With such faith and trust we are able to enter a new year that promises to be significant in the life of Carey.

We shall need patience and confidence in God’s purposes and provision. It will not be easy, things will change and be done in different rooms and different ways. But we shall, I believe, be blessed by the love and responses of God who does not leave us, who is faithful to us and will support, guide and strengthen as we ask of him and wait on him.

We will no doubt need such levels of faith and confidence in our own lives and circumstances as they continue to unfold.

A new year of service at Carey lies ahead, may The Lord help us to use our times and opportunities wisely and well in the rest of 2013 and into 2014.
