The Strong Word – December 2013

“Love Changes Everything” is the title of a popular modern song. Nothing will be the same, the song goes, days are longer, pain and joy is deeper because of Love. The song ends by reminding us that love changes lives forever. You will have to listen to it to hear the lyrics for yourself if you wish.

One of our Christmas carols reminds us, “Love came down at Christmas.” This is the time of the year that we especially remember the love of God shown by the birth of his son into the world, to live and to die for us.

Christmas gives us the chance again this year to consider God’s love and his plans to show his love for the world through his son Jesus. Everything, absolutely everything, changed when at Bethlehem in the stable, the baby Jesus was born, and Angels marked the occasion by singing. Immanuel, God with us, is not just a statement, it is a truth that Christians can testify to each and every day.

Jesus does change things forever, sin and death need no longer have power over us. To accept him as a baby as well as teacher and Saviour is a privilege and free choice, but it is a choice that will change us forever. We will see things differently and be better able to reflect the love of God to a dark, cold and sad world.

Christmas, as with the birth of any baby into the world, brings hope, a hope that one day the child will grow up to make a difference and be a blessing, Jesus continues to bless and bring hope. The New Year, 2014, is dated based on the year of Jesus’ birth and is a year in which we know he will continue to reveal his purposes and show us his love. We move into the New Year in faith, confident of all it will be for us and the church we belong to.

A Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year to you all.
