The Strong Word March 2014

It is strange going into March before Lent has begun, but a late Easter this year means that is how it is. The Daffodils will no doubt have bloomed and gone, well before Easter Sunday!

Even Mothers Day is the last Sunday in March, so even Mum will have to wait this year for the flowers and chocolates!

Lent is an important time in the Christian year. It is a time of 40 days when we give more careful thought to what it really means to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ. The joy of Christmas is behind us and the triumphalism of Easter is ahead, but Lent is the time when we get real, a time when we follow Jesus into the desert, when we are honest about temptation and sin. It is a time when we recognise the need to decide wisely, as Jesus would decide, when confronted with moral choices.

Lent reminds me that choices we make are ours, we must not blame others for our choices, but also I am reminded it is not easy to do the right thing. Often the right decision is opposite to what pleases us.

Lent is traditionally a time when Christians go without, to deny themselves chocolate, or certain other foods, a time to forgo a favourite TV programme maybe, not to make us pleased with ourselves, or to make God love us more, but to give more time to our Christian walk and faith. I have also known people cut down in Lent so that the money saved can be sent to those who are less fortunate.

At the end of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus turned to his followers and said, “Not everyone who calls me Lord will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only those who do my Fathers will.” Lent is a time when we can check how far we have drifted from God’s will in our lives and to seek to put it right before we drift too far….

May we use the season of Lent wisely this year, and may God bless us
