The Strong Word April 2014

It remains amazing to me, even at my age, that each year at this time, as long as you don’t live somewhere like my sister in New Zealand, the garden begins to burst into life after lying dormant over the winter season.

Trees that looked dead have large buds. Snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils have pushed their way out of the ground and display life. Their colour brings hope that summer is on the way.

It has not escaped the notice of the Christian Church in the northern hemisphere that this new life comes at the same time of the year as Easter, a time when we remember that Jesus rose out of the cold silent grave into eternal life.

He was dead. Jesus did lie for 3 days in the tomb, and yet he rose from the dead as the power of God was at work in him. Death lost its sting, The power of death cannot hold the son of God. He is the first in history to rise from the dead and to enter the heavenly realm.

Easter reminds us that there is hope. Summer is on the way, when all, not just some, of the garden will be in full bloom and every tree, shrub and flower will look as God intended, lush, colourful and growing into maturity.

Easter also reminds us that this is just the start. Jesus tells Mary and Martha in John 11, “I am the resurrection and life, anyone who believes in me though they die yet will they live, and no one who is alive and has faith will ever die” WOW. Summer really is on the way. We shall have eternal life, and be as lush and fruitful as the flowers and shrubs in our gardens as God’s spirit works in our hearts and lives.

Just as we have quietly celebrated the warmer weather and the longer days recently, so we can truly celebrate the hope that comes from the Good News of that first Easter. It is a hope that will lead to it always being summer in our hearts and lives. Now that really is something to celebrate. No more winter.

Happy Easter!
