The Strong Word – September 2016

I remember when I worked in an office, even after a fortnights holiday, after a few days back it was as though I had never been away! The work had continued to come onto my desk and the days of relaxation by the sea seemed such a long way off, a very distant memory as I began to work down the pile of paper, and phone messages.

Yet I recall that Jesus once said to his disciples in Matthew 11.28:-“Come to me all you who are weary, and I will give you rest.”

I believe the secret to true rest, peace and contentment in life is to be close to our Lord. To be with Jesus on a regular basis in prayer and quiet, and so find and know that peace, rest and contentment he gives.

This will mean doing what we believe he asks and calls us to do and not just what is there to do or what we “fancy” doing. It will mean doing less sometimes, and sometimes nothing. Why do I often wait until I am ill, or for it to snow until I slow and stop?

September marks a new year beginning at Carey. Some things no longer happen, such as Girls’ Brigade, and the Building Committee, whilst there are new ventures such as Boys’ Brigade and Girls Association, and CareyTots beginning.

Many will have new responsibilities at work, or in our families to consider as we move into our new year together at Carey. May it be that we are able to assess well our responsibilities to God and his church to others and to ourselves as once again the summer turns into autumn. Am I, are we willing to “Wait on him”, as we allow the Lord to reveal to us his thoughts and ways?

I pray that we will all know that “rest” which Jesus offers freely to us, his disciples, as we move now towards the end of the year and into 2017.
